As part of Ngee Ann Primary School’s 70th Founders’ Day
celebrations, the school had kicked off the festivities of commemorating this
momentous event by breaking a record of having the largest number of people
doing calligraphy together.
The school had easily smashed the previous record of 80 people
doing calligraphy together. On 22 February 2010, with the combined effort of
the whole school that includes all the pupils from Primary 1 to 6, the members
of the staff and even parent volunteers; a total of 1515 people painted the
Chinese characters ‘義安’ on pieces of red paper.
All the pupils, including non-Chinese pupils, had participated in this
record breaking event. In preparation for this event, all the pupils have had
practised writing the two Chinese characters using calligraphy brushes for
weeks prior to the event. The characters were chosen not only because it was
the school’s namesake but also it symbolises righteousness and peace, virtues
that personify the spirit of the school and its 70th Founders’ Day
celebrations.
